Can you judge a guy by his apartment?
January 21st 2008 13:32
In Germany, there is this one reality show that I really like to watch. I can't remember what it's called, but its main aim is to find a nice date for some single girl (a different one in each episode).
The way it works is that the girl visits the apartments of four different guys (while they are not there, of course) and makes various judgements about those men based on the neatness, decorative style and general ambience of their apartments. Among many other things, she makes assumptions about whether they are romantic or not, what they must look like and what their hobbies are. In the end, she must pick one of them as her chosen date before she finds out which apartment belongs to whom.
It's a fun show to watch, but it also got me thinking. Does a man's (or anyone's) apartment necessarily reflect a lot about them? For example, what if someone is just not into decorating because they are busy pursuing other interests? Could we wrongly assume that this person is boring or lazy?
Girls and guys, what is your view on this?

I reckon you can always tell something about the person by their home, even if they are broke and barely there, it's still their base and where all their shit is. It might have floral wallpaper because they, despite hating it, haven't had a chance to change it, but I think you can see personal style everywhere in simpler things.
Well, I hope so, because I'm broke, time-poor and live in a place I fondly call The Hovel! I'd hate to think what it is saying about me! So I will just rely on my shoes, books and DVD collection.

I mean, if they have a lot of books, we can safely assume he likes to read. If he has a keyboard or a guitar probably means he likes his music. But a messy one doesn't mean he is always messy, we might have just tripped upon him on a bad day!

I guess you could tell a fair amount about someone by their apartment, depending on how nosy you wanted to get

Life in Germany
Amy -- I sometimes do catch myself judging people on what their apartment looks like. I guess we all do it. But luckily, first impressions might not necessarily be that important if we visit someone more than once. Because each time we visit we will probably (hopefully) notice those little things that say something positive and interesting about them.
Krystal -- Unfortunately, lots of guys are like that. *sigh* If only they realised that a little bit of decorating effort actually IMPRESSES most women.
D. -- Actually, you'd be surprised to see how messy some of those apartments look. I was surprised myself because, just like you, I assumed they would make their apartments look 100% perfect and clean before the TV crew arrived. Obviously that's not enough motivation for some people.
